How to: Setup the Russian and Ukrainian layout under Apple Leopard

First of all i can confirm that, even if they are not available on the Apple web site, the Apple Keyboard with Cyrillic letters exist!
We found it in a normal Apple store in Ukraine, it was available in both versions: wired and wireless.
The price is almost identical to the “normal” English ones.

We didn’t find the keyboard with Ukrainian layout but this doesn’t mean that they just don’t exist.

If you need a mac book with Russian layout, you can find it as well!

Set up the Russian / Ukrainian layout on Apple Leopard

You can follow this procedure even if you don’t have a true Russian / Ukrainian keyboard. For to find the correct keys, you can print the layout published in this post.

1 Go to “System preferences”, select “International” and then “Input menu”

2 Now select: “Russian”, and “Ukrainian” in the list.

3 The click on “Keyboard shortcuts” and select (activate) “Input Menu”

4 Chose the keys combination you like best for to switch between the three different layouts (the default shortcut enter in conflict with the one of Spotlight, you can use a different shortcut or just deactivate the shortcut for Spotlight)

5 No you will be able to see the layout flag next to the battery indicator, when you want you can switch between all these layouts.

Advice

Under “International” –> “Input menu”, u can also select the option “Keyboard Viewer” which allow you to see the keyboard layout by clicking on the layout flag and then on “Show Keyboard Viewer”.

How to: Ukrainian customs declaration. English version

Customs declaration Ukraine

It is not needed to fill out the custom declaration if you travel just with your personal items (clothes, notebook, camera, mobile phone, etc) and if you don’t have with you big sum of money.

The most common situation for which you need to fill out the declaration are:

-big sum of money (several thousands of Dollars)
-goods, presents the total value of which exceed the sum of 200 euro or equiv.
-more than 1 liter of spirits, 2 of wine and 5 of beer
-cigarettes max 200 or 200 gram of tobacco
-Antiques and works of arts, musical instruments
-Flora and fauna objects, their parts and products obtained of them
-Food for personal use which value is more than 50 euro

This list provide only the most common situation, but exist also other limitations (ex. weapons, radioactive materials, etc).
The values and the items described in the list can change with the time.

For more information visit:

http://www.customs.gov.ua
or call: +380442817379 (I don’t know if they speak English)

If you don’t have anything to declare, then pass through the “Green Corridor” without filling out the declaration. If you have something to declare then follow the “Red Corridor” with your custom declaration.

Attention!

Even if you pass through the “Green corridor” it is possible that the guards will ask you to open the bag. (this doesn’t happen so often and at the opposite of what people may think the Ukrainian officers are quite polite)

Advice

Take with you all possible receives of the important items that you take with you both presents and personal items. (i mean for ex. notebook or any object that cost not so few)
The same about the things you will buy in Ukraine.

How to: Setup the Ukrainian / Russian layout under Windows and Ubuntu

In this post we will discover how to configure an Ukrainian / Russian keyboard under Windows XP and Ubuntu.

If you are in Ukraine, you can find such keyboards in any computer shop, the price change according to the specifies.
A standard wired keyboard can cost around 50 Hrivnya (10 usd) or even less.

Notice that even with your old not Ukrainian keyboard you can type in Cyrillic, in fact the only difference between all these keyboards are the printed letters on the Keys.

Anyway for to use your new Ukrainian keyboard (or your old one) you need to complete the following procedures:

WINDOWS XP

1 Go to the “Control Panel” (start or my computer —> Control panel)

2 Inside “Regional Language Options” select “Languages” —> “Details…”

3 Now we are in “Text Services and Input Languages”

Here select “Add…” and chose inside “Input language” Ukrainian and then press “OK”.
Do the same for the Russian language.

As result you should see at least 3 languages under “Installed Services”.

4 Finally select your Default Input Language: for ex. English (United States).

5 Now miss only one more step:
We should set up the “Switch keys” (the keys that pressed together allow you to pass from one input language to another one.)

Select “Key Settings…” and then “Change key sequence”.
CTR + SHIFT is a good choice for to switch between languages
(u can ignore the other parameter about layout)

6 So now press “OK” to close all those windows and you are done.

Next to the clock you will see a small blue square with the input language in use.
Try to press CTR+SHIFT and it should switch between EN, UK, RU.

UBUNTU 8.04 Hardy Heron

Do the same again for the Russian language.

As result you should have at least 3 languages under “Selected layout”.

4 In the end, select the Default language ex. USA (click on small button on the right under “Default”).

5 Now lets select the “switch keys” (the keys that pressed together allow you to pass from one input language to another one.)

Click on “Layout Options…”
Now in the new window click on layout switching and select “Ctr+Shift change layout”.

6 Press “close” in every window and you are done.
