Ukrainian newspapers in English language

| More

In Ukraine there are not only newspapers in Russian and Ukrainian language. There are some few of them which are also available in English.

On this post we will talk about:

- Kyiv post
- Kyiv weekly or Weekly.ua
- Business Ukraine
- Meridian and Panorama

All these newspaper speak about Ukraine one a wide range of topics.

Possible that exist even other ones but so far these are the ones we know.
(if you know some more, pls write us. Comment or email)

Kyiv post

This is probably the most famous English newspaper of Ukraine.

It is available only in English and has the shape of a true newspaper. In the past was printed in color but nowadays is just printed in black and white (probable effect of the crisis).

On the Kyiv post is possible to find also ads about Real estate, Jobs and personal ads from normal people.

The most beautiful thing of this newspaper is, from our point of view, the web site where it is possible to read articles, guides find photos and share your opinions (there is also a forum).
This is for sure the best site where to find information about Ukraine in English language.

Web site

Price and subscription

If you want to make a subscription you can chose to get a paper copy or just to get it through the net.
For to know about subscription read:
http://www.kyivpost.com/newspaper/subscribe

When it is issued

Every week on Friday

Kyiv weekly or Weekly.ua

On the contrary of the Kyiv post this magazine is multi-language. Each copy of it is issued in two language: English – Russian or English – Ukrainian. Half of the magazine is in one language and the other half is in English.

The articles are not always identical so it is possible to find an article in Russian but the same article may be not present on the English side and the opposite.

Anyway it is still a nice way for to lear Russian or Ukrainian.

The Kyiv weekly was before issued in the shape of newspaper but nowadays it changed and became a true magazine and it is called Weekly.ua

From our point of view this magazine is better than the Kyiv post, we like that is printed in color and the possibility to learn also some Russian and Ukrainian word.

In general the magazine is really very nice and also cheaper than the Kyiv post.

Also the Kyiv weekly is available online but the web site is not as good as the one of the Kyiv post.

Price

One copy was costing: 2.15 UAH (anyway price may have increased)

When it is issued

Every week on Thursday.

Business Ukraine

This is another magazine, and despite of the title is not completely focused on economy but it is also possible to read about other different topics.

To say the truth We don’t know so much about this magazine since we met it for the first time at the airport as free copy before to come inside the plane. We really liked it.

Its website, doesn’t look up to date… anyway if you are in Ukraine you can try to find it in some newsstand.

In future we hope to find some more information about it.

Meridian and Panorama

These two magazines are offered by national airlines, and you can read them while you fly with Aerosvit or Donbass aero (Meridian) and Ukrainian international airline (Panorama).

These magazines are free of charge and are issued in English and Ukrainian. They speak in general about traveling and give some extra information about the airline company and its routes.

They are very useful for to learn Ukrainian since the text in English is just after the text in Ukrainian.

You can find these magazines not only onboard but also in the offices of these companies (for ex. when you want to buy a ticket)

Kiev Boryspil (Borispol) airport: Polit buses

| More

The Kiev Boryspil (Borispol) airport is well connected with the center of Kiev by autobus and taxis which are available, day and night, just outside the airport.

In this post we will discover what are the buses called Polit Полит and why, from our point of view, are the best way to reach Kiev.

What are Polit Полит buses?

Polit are buses which connect the Boryspil airport with Kiev.
They are not all identical but there are buses of different brand and dimensions.
Some are large buses and other are just mashrutke.

Polit to BoryspilTwo large buses polit…

Autobus to Boryspil…a polit bus of smaller dimensions…

Bus to Boryspil…another one even smaller and older…

Mashrutka to Boryspil…a Polit – Mashrutka, waiting outside the Kiev railway station

How to recognize them

It is possible to recognize them from the plate with the number “322” and the direction of the Bus (Boryspil).

Where they go and where they depart

They connect the Kiev Boryspil airport with the Kiev railway station.

The raid last 50 minutes with only one intermediate stop before the airport

These buses depart from the parking just in front of the terminal B (on the left of the parking)

In Kiev are possible to be found right outside the main railway station (new side).

Once at the railway station, you can get to the metro “Vokzal Вокзал” and from there reach your final destination. The metro station is next to the old side of the railway station.

Price

A one way ticket cost 25 Hryvnia about 2 euro/person. There is not difference of price if you take a large bus or a small one.

You can buy the tickets directly on the bus, the driver will collect the money and give the tickets before
the bus will depart.

Inside the bus

These buses are in general quite comfortable with obvious differences between new and old buses.

Polit timetable

During the day they depart every 15 – 20 min. In the night they depart every 50 min.

Autobus VS Taxi and similar

From our point of view, there is not any reason to prefer a taxi at a bus (if you are not in a great hurry)

Buses may take some extra minute but the price difference is evident. Taxi cost much more and the price change according to the driver which sometimes just drive his own car and has not taximeter. With buses you know the price from the very beginning and this price doesn’t became 10 times more if you are foreigner.

If you want to take anyway a taxi, ask the price before to say yes.

Apart of buses and taxi, are also popular those transfers offered by hotels, travel agencies and so on…
Here you may get a driver that speak your language but the price is usually higher than the one of normal taxis.

In the end if you don’t need to run, save money and travel safely inside a polit.

Kiev Boryspil (Borispol) international airport

| More

Boryspil State International airport (KBP) is the largest airport in Ukraine.
It is located in Boryspil, a town at about 30 km from Kiev.
Often is called Borispol, the Russian version of Boryspil.

The airport is divided in 3 terminals:
Terminal A: Domestic flights
Terminal B: International flights (the largest one)
Terminal C: only for VIP

These terminals are not connected between each other.
For to move from ex. from Terminal B to Terminal A you have to walk outside (in the parking) for about 100m.

Terminal A and terminal B are very different from each other. While the terminal B is large and modern, terminal A is quite small and offer only the basic services. The terminal C is for VIP.

Wedding transcription

This is the first thing you need to do. Go to the office, (the “carabiniere” at the entrance will show you were to go) and give your translated wedding certificate. The embassy will give you back a copy of it to be used when you will apply for the visa.

Attention!
The embassy will not give you back the original of the wedding certificate. So apart from the copy for the visa office, ask also for an extra copy, authenticated, which you will need once in Italy.

Visa application

Now go to the visa office, the door just after the entrance of the embassy. Here you need to fill out 3 forms:

- 2 copies of the visa application (one they will give you back as receipt)
- the declaration for the “ricongiungimento familiare”

Fill out the first 2 forms answering to the questions with exception of those with the asterisk, which are not required.

The second form is a simple declaration where you ask the visa for your husband or wife.

If you apply for the visa “familiare al seguito” it is possible that it will be released faster. In this case you need to give also a copy of your tickets for to show that you really travel together.

Required time and difficulties

This kind of visa is give without particular trubles since the Ukrainian citizen is your wife or husband and so you have the right to keep your family together.

In general this visa is issued in few days. It is refused only for serious reasons and the refuse has to be motivated (this doesn’t happen for the touristic visa, which refusal is not motivated).

Where to get back your passport with visa?

The passport will be sent to you with the help of FedEx. At the embassy, after that you have given the visa application, they will ask you to fill out another form where you need to write the address where you want your passport to be delivered and also the name of another person which can take it for you. If you want, you can take it back directly at the FedEx office in Kiev.

Which kind of visa will you get?

The issued visa should be D+C Multi.

Multi = multi entrance
D = Visa for long staying or National
C = Schengen visa

The visa should last 365 days with the exception of the Schengen part (C) which last max 90 days.
